FEAR GOD AND LIVE FEARLESS

FEAR GOD AND LIVE FEARLESS

Fear—that feeling of distress, apprehension, or alarm caused by impending danger. Most people are afraid of fear! Or at least, they want a life without it. The good news is that fear has a cure, and it also has a good purpose.

The Bible describes a form of fear that is devoid of dread and, at the same time, cures all other fears: the fear of the Lord—a path to wisdom and peace. This is the fear that we all need.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” — Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord doesn’t mean being terrified of God but having a deep reverence, awe, and respect for Him. It means recognizing His holiness, power, and justice while also trusting in His mercy and love.

True fear of God leads to obedience, wisdom, and a closer relationship with Him. It keeps us from sin and draws us into His protection and blessings.

God deserves to be feared because He is holy—He is perfect, pure, and set apart (Isaiah 6:3). He is also a just God who will judge sin, even while offering forgiveness through Jesus (Romans 6:23). Moreover, God is loving, and that is why the fear of the Lord leads to life and peace, not despair (Proverbs 14:27).

The fear of the Lord yields multiple fruits, including wisdom and understanding:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” — Proverbs 1:7

It also guarantees protection and life:

“The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” — Proverbs 19:23

Above all, it offers invaluable friendship with God:

“The Lord confides in those who fear Him.” — Psalm 25:14

Jesus perfectly modeled a life of such reverence. Though He was the Son of God, He walked in perfect obedience to His Father. He taught us to pray,

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.” — Matthew 6:9

He obeyed the Father completely, showing us that the fear of the Lord is not about dread but about love and devotion.
