SERENDIPITY: Coincidence or Divine Providence?

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord…” — Psalm 37:23

Many people use the word serendipity to describe a pleasant or valuable discovery made by chance. For example, someone unexpectedly meets the right person, finds a job they were not looking for, or narrowly escapes danger.

But as Christians, we know that nothing is truly by chance. What the world calls serendipity, we often recognize as God’s providence—His loving guidance and sovereign control over our lives.

The Bible is filled with examples:

Joseph was sold into slavery, yet God used those painful events to save an entire nation (Genesis 50:20).

Ruth “happened” to glean in the field of Boaz (Ruth 2:3), but God was directing her steps.

Esther became queen “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14), preserving God’s people from destruction.

The Ethiopian official “just happened” to meet Philip and heard the gospel (Acts 8:26–39).

These events were not accidents. They were divine appointments.

Perhaps you have experienced moments that seemed like coincidence—a timely phone call, an unexpected opportunity, or a narrow escape. Those moments remind us that God is at work even when we cannot see Him.

However, the greatest “serendipity” is not finding money, a job, or success. It is finding Jesus Christ. Yet even that is not by chance. God lovingly calls people to Himself.

Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6

If you have not surrendered your life to Christ, today is your opportunity. Don’t dismiss this moment as coincidence. God may be speaking to your heart right now.

Pray this with all your heart:
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your loving guidance. I acknowledge that You are in control of my life. Forgive my sins, come into my heart, and be my Lord and Saviour. Help me to trust Your plan and follow You every day. Amen.

Remember: What the world calls serendipity, the child of God calls God’s providence. Trust Him with your life, for He is working all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
